2026 marks the 10yr Anniversary of Gemma Vendetta Cosmetics

From the launch pad, back in 2016.

What started as an epiphany of "why don't I start a natural mineral cosmetics brand, based on my successful styling persona, so I can keep my personal and professional kit stocked and share the benefits of these products with everyone" grew into a fully fledged business.

I embraced the solo-mum-preneur name tag, utilising the SA Government's then named NEIS (new enterprise incentive scheme). As a self-funded start-up, with no prior business skills, its only now 10 years later that I'm hyper-aware of what a crazy bold idea this was. So whilst my Son was in Kindergarten, I was in the city obtaining my Cert4 in Small Business Management from Holmesglen self employment I put my house deposit into this venture. Of course, my life depended on it. Of course I was passionate about my idea. I had no choice!

I got distribution early, I was supported by media outlets like The Advertiser, The Barossa Leader, Glam Adelaide and more.

It's safe to say that if I knew then, what I know now, I may not have jumped in so quickly. There's a reason that approximately 90% of startups fail, a consistent trend since the 1990s where only 1 in 10 survive long-term. Roughly 10%–20% fail within the first year, while 70% fail between years two and five. By year ten, about 65%–70% of businesses have closed. Well, I'm still here, albeit pacing myself, but what an incredible achievement that I've never quite acknowledged before. It's nice to be part of the remaining 9%. Even if it has dialled back to a side hustle.

Happy 10th Anniversary- officially double digits for GVC, baby!
